Vital Headache Meningitis Information

Headache meningitis is an infection of the fluid, which fills the spinal cord and surrounds the brain. It can be caused by both virus and bacteria.

At the very onset, it is essential to know whether it is caused by viral or bacterial infection because the former is less severe than the later, which can even lead to hearing deficiencies and brain damage.

Formerly, Haemophilus Influenzae B (HIB) type bacteria was most threatening whereas now, headache meningitis is mostly caused due to Streptococcus Pneumoniae and Neisseria Menengitidis.

Symptoms of Headache due to Meningitis
Some common symptoms, which can be seen in the age group above two years, are high fever, stiff neck, headache, nausea, vomiting, sleepiness, confusion, etc. All these can develop over some span of time.

In infants, the conspicuous features of headache meningitis are fever, lethargy, poor appetite and/or vomiting, respiratory distress, apnea and cyanosis. At an advanced stage, patients of all age groups can even have seizures.

Headache due to Meningitis – Contagious Or Not
Meningitis is contagious; but not to the extent of common cold or flu. Casual contact causes no harm but contact with the patient’s oral secretions (coughing, kissing) can lead to meningitis.

Close or prolonged contact with patients suffering from meningitis caused by Neisseria Menengitidis or HIB can also lead to spreading of the disease.

How to Diagnose Meningitis
If you notice the symptoms of meningitis, immediately contact your doctor. For accurate diagnosis, the doctor obtains a little amount of spinal fluid by the process of spinal tap i.e. insertion of needle in a fluid filled part of the spine.

The bacteria obtained from the sample fluid is then grown and identified.

Headache Meningitis Treatment
The bacterial form of headache due to meningitis can be cured with effective antibiotics. However, for absolute cure, early starting of the treatment is an essential prerequisite.

Some vaccines have proved to be effective against HIB, some strains of Neisseria Menengitidis and other types of Streptococcus Pneumoniae.

Of all these, the vaccines against HIB are most safe, effective and widely used.

So, if you notice any symptom of headache meningitis, do contact your doctor immediately. Early diagnosis and proper medication can cure you absolutely.
