Temporomandibular joint is the one that connects your jaw bone to the head. Thus, when these joints function abnormally you may suffer from a kind of ear or jaw pain along with occasional headaches.

In many cases, this type of headache has been seen to get aggravated by yawning or chewing. In such cases, you experience fullness in the ears and you cannot even open your mouth widely.

Problem in temporomandibular joint occurs due to several reasons. Tension, stress, overuse, bruxism are some of the common causes of this sort pain.

Other reasons for the discomfort include inflammation of the joint or arthritis along with traumatic injury and disease.

Treatments To Provide Relief To The Pain

To provide a relief to this sort of joint discomfort that usually results in headache joint pain, you are often asked to have a night-guard dental splint especially in case of those who have the habit of grinding their teeth.

You can also take to some self help measures like application of heat with the help of a heating pad or hot compressing the upper jaw area to provide relaxation to the abutting muscles being affected by spasm.

When you have joint pain and headache, you are strictly recommended to have a soft food diet and moreover, you should also stop chewing your gum.

If required, your doctor may suggest you to have anti-inflammatory medicines like ibuprofen and aspirin. Thus, when you have joint pain and headache, you should at once consult a general dentist or TMJ specialist.

However, there is no permanent cure for TMJ. Treatment can only keep away the pain for sometime. However, the first line treatment for such a condition includes physical therapy, orthotics, changes in behavior, and medication.

Whereas in extreme cases of TMJ and headache joint pain, you may be suggested surgery, orthodontics and invasive dental procedures.
