Is Exercise Induced Headache Affecting You?

If you get exercise induced headache you are one of many people afflicted with this problem.

Headaches can be brought on by a variety of different types of exercise, such as running, cycling, weights, games, and other sports activities.
For the keen sports person these headaches can become quite debilitating and can affect the ability to enjoy sports to the fullest extent.

There is research to suggest that this type of headache is connected to strain in the muscles of the head and the neck.

However there is no clear-cut explanation of why this type of headache occurs. Both men and women can be affected by this type of headache.

Often these headaches are known as exertional headaches, as they are not the result of trauma, such as a whiplash headache, but the result of effort and strain from exerting oneself.

It is thought that supporting the weight of the head during exercise and fitness activity can lead to the strain that results in exercise induced headache.

Of course, you may be suffering from headache for another reason, such as blocked sinuses or infections, and exercise can often exacerbate the pain and discomfort of these headaches.

If you exercise for longer periods you may find that you are more prone to these headaches simply because you are putting more pressure on your neck and head for longer periods of time.

Some research has indicated that the problem affects women more that men, and it has been suggested that perhaps men have stronger neck muscles to support the head whilst exercising.

With any type of headache, it is always best to ensure that it is not the result of something more sinister. If you suffer from exercise induced headache it is worth speaking to your doctor about it.

A sports or physical therapist may be able to offer some valuable advice about relieving tension as well as about effective posture during exercise, which could help to relieve this type of headache.
