Do You Suffer From Cervical Disc Headache?

Headache is one of the most common forms of illness and cervical disc headache is not a rare type. It is seen in most of the patients who suffer from upper body fibromyalgia.

Some of the common symptoms of this type of headache are palpation over the occipital area, some sort of neck or shoulder pain and posterior component to the headache. Also at times, due to too much headache the neck movements get restricted.

An insight into the Cervical Disc Headache
If you have a nagging headache problem, it is essential for your medical practitioner to conduct an upper-body fibromyalgia exam. To find the pain-generating disc, your doctor will examine each side of the anterior cervical spine to the right and the trachea-bronchial structure to the left.

Most of the times, the concerned disc is C5-C6 and more the pain in the disc, more is the headache. Many patients have more than one painful disc and it is also seen that one painful disc is located on the right hand side of one level whereas another is on the left hand side of some other level.

For accurate diagnosis of cervical disc headache, doctor can place the index finger at a point between the maudible and xyphoid or at the frontal skin line of the most painful side.

With the application of pressure, when the head is turned from side to side, the painful point gets located. From neutral position, the head can be turned to a maximum of 30 to 45 degree to facilitate the procedure.

Role of Anterior Cervical Fusion
For a successful detection of cervical disc headache, the medical practitioner may go for the examination of anterior cervical spine, complemented by the anterior cervical fusion.

At the level of solid fusion, there is no pain. Pain is located in either at the adjacent disc level or at the same level following the non-union in fusion. This is reflected in the lateral X-ray in the post-fusion stage.

The ability of the patient’s body to fuse, vary from one person to another. Since smoking deters the process of fusion, it is essential to give up smoking prior to the fusion procedure.

Treatment of Headache due to Cervical Disc
Apart from surgery, your doctor can also suggest medical management. At the initial stage of the treatment, soft surgical collars can be used to ease the pain.

So, if you are suffering from cervical disc headache contact your physician now for an early diagnosis and proper treatment.
