Botox injections for headache are directly injected into the affected muscles. Botox obstructs the release of neurotransmitter in localized site, which stops the nerves from relaying signals from brain to the muscles, thus causing temporary paralysis.

The injections help in relaxing of the muscles reducing the tension that triggers headache.

Once the Botox is injected for the prevention of headache, it takes several weeks before the injection takes effect. Due to this reason it is necessary to have it injected before every 3 months or so.

One of the disadvantages with Botox injections for headache treatment and migraines is that it is quite expensive. Each treatment could cost as much as $350 to $1000 and only a few insurance policies cover Botox injections used for this purpose.

However, the long term effect of using Botox injections for headache is not fully known. It is essential to discuss the benefits and risks of such a treatment with a doctor before proceeding with treatment.
