Essentially a neurotoxin that attacks nerve cells, Botox is also referred as botulinum toxin. Originally it was approved by FDA to be used in events concerning hyperactivity of muscles associated with problem of health and medical conditions. The studies suggest that Botox paralyzes or weakens muscles by suppressing the release of acetylcholine - ester of choline playing a role in transmission of nerve impulses at synapses and myoneural (muscle-nerve) junctions. Acetylcholine inhibits the muscle contraction allowing the muscle to relax. The effectiveness of Botox injections for headache is defined by different theories; however there exist no exact reasoning. One of the theories suggests elimination of muscle tension and spasms which are the major causes of migraine headache. The injection is given to the victim even before the migraine headache starts.

Botox injections for headache are directly injected into the affected muscles. Botox obstructs the release of neurotransmitter in localized site, which stops the nerves from relaying signals from brain to the muscles, thus causing temporary paralysis. The injections help in relaxing of the muscles reducing the tension that triggers headache. Once the Botox is injected for the prevention of headache, it takes several weeks before the injection takes effect. Due to this reason it is necessary to have it injected before every 3 months or so. Those undergoing treatment with Botox injections for headache, typically need to get it injected every few months. However, if there is a long interval between injections the patient may experience headaches. Still there lies a doubt about the safety of these neurotoxin injections. Most of the migraine injections are consumed orally and end up in the blood stream. However, Botox is injected directly into the muscle tissue and it gets absorbed into the blood system unlike the typical headache medications, having fewer side effects. Generally, the only side effects of injecting Botox are drooping of the eyelids for a couple of days or pain in the area of injection for a few days. One of the disadvantages with Botox injections for headache treatment and migraines is that it is quite expensive. Each treatment could cost as much as $350 to $1000 and only a few insurance policies cover Botox injections used for this purpose. However, the long term effect of using Botox injections for headache is not fully known. It is essential to discuss the benefits and risks of such a treatment with a doctor before proceeding with treatment.
